Our 1:1 tutoring can advance students by 4 months of instruction during the summer!

PREVENT THE SUMMER SLIDE

As an educator, you know that summer learning loss is real. 1:1 tutoring allows students to keep the momentum from school year interventions to maintain or even make gains during the summer months. This means you can pick up where you left off (or even advance) when students return to school.

Here’s How OpenLiteracy’s Summer Program Works

Over a video call, certified teacher tutor will present each student with a short assessment to understand their reading and writing proficiency and identify any key skill gaps. We use CORE PHONICS and DIBELS ORF.

Initial Reading Assessment

Once we have an understanding of students’ instructional needs, we prepare a personalized learning plan for 1:1 tutoring. We work with summer school staff to establish a tutoring schedule as we bridge existing skill gaps and strengthen students’ key foundational skills.

Personalized Learning

Each 30-minute lesson includes a warm up or recap of previous lessons, the introduction of a target skill, practice exercises to increase speed and fluency, reading connected text, and writing practice.

1:1 Instruction

Progress Monitoring

We use exit tickets at the end of every lesson to monitor progress and ensure that students are receiving the lessons that they need to make rapid progress in reading. We communicate this progress with you each week.

FAQs

  • We collaborate with your summer school team to integrate 1:1 tutoring seamlessly into your summer instructional day, pairing students with certified teachers for 30-minute, personalized sessions four times per week (Monday - Thursday)

  • OpenLiteracy Reading is an explicit and systematic reading curriculum created by a former professor of reading and a team of former teachers and reading specialists. Our curriculum introduces students to the reading skills that are necessary for proficient reading and emphasizes both foundational skills and reading comprehension at every step.

The scope and sequence is designed to ensure that students systematically acquire each skill and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence. We’ve designed our curriculum with novices in mind, and so while experienced teachers and tutors love our lessons, paraprofessionals, novice teachers, and other educators also find that the lessons are accessible and easy to use. OpenLiteracy Reading is designed for use in 1:1 tutoring, small group instruction, and intervention. It is currently being used for students on grade level as well as Tier II and Tier III Intervention.

  • Our tutors are all certified teachers with an average of 15 years experience teaching in elementary classrooms.

  • We use initial assessments and ongoing progress monitoring to create a personalized learning pathway for each student. Our team of learning specialists carefully monitor each students’ learning so that we can maximize the impact of this 1:1 intervention.

    • Accelerated Progress: With consistent, 1:1 tutoring sessions, students can make faster progress in improving their reading and writing abilities than in a whole-group setting. The concentrated focus on literacy skills allows for deeper learning and skill development.

    • Prevention of Summer Slide: Summer literacy tutoring helps prevent the "summer slide," where students experience a loss of academic skills during the extended break from school. By providing consistent instruction throughout summer school, students can maintain and even improve their reading and writing skills over the break.

    • Targeted Support: High dosage tutoring allows educators to provide targeted support to address each student's specific needs and challenges. OpenLiteracy’s personalized learning plans target each student’s unique skill gaps in order to help students overcome reading struggles.

    • Increased Confidence: As students make progress through intensive tutoring sessions, they often experience a boost in confidence in their reading and writing abilities. This increased confidence can lead to greater engagement in literacy activities and a more positive attitude towards learning and school in general.

    • Long-Term Academic Success: Research has shown that high dosage summer literacy tutoring can have long-term benefits for students, including improved academic achievement and higher graduation rates. By building strong literacy skills early on, students are better equipped for success in higher grades and beyond.

    • Holistic Approach: OpenLiteracy’s tutoring lessons incorporate a holistic approach that not only focuses on reading and writing skills but also includes activities to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. This comprehensive approach helps students become well-rounded learners.

Overall, high dosage summer literacy tutoring can be a highly effective intervention for improving reading and writing skills, preventing summer learning loss, and setting students on a path to long-term academic success.

  • Some signs of summer reading loss include:

    • Decreased Reading Fluency: If your child's reading fluency has declined over the summer, with more frequent pauses, hesitations, or errors when reading aloud, it may indicate summer reading loss.

    • Reduced Comprehension: Difficulty understanding or recalling information from books or passages that they could previously comprehend well can be a sign of reading regression.

    • Avoidance of Reading: If your child shows a lack of interest in reading or actively avoids reading activities during the summer, it may suggest a loss of reading motivation or enjoyment.

    • Decreased Vocabulary: Summer reading loss can lead to a decline in vocabulary skills, evidenced by difficulties with understanding or using new words in context.

    • Loss of Reading Stamina: If your child tires more quickly when reading or has trouble sustaining attention during reading activities, it may indicate a decline in reading stamina over the summer.

    • Spelling Errors: Increased spelling errors in written work can be a sign of summer reading loss, as it may suggest a lack of exposure to written language and spelling patterns during the break.

    • Difficulty with Reading Levels: If your child struggles with books or texts that were previously within their reading level, it may indicate a regression in reading skills over the summer.

    • Confusion with Sight Words: For younger readers, difficulty recognizing or recalling sight words (high-frequency words that should be instantly recognizable) can be a sign of summer reading loss.

    • Decline in Reading Confidence: A decrease in confidence when reading aloud or expressing frustration with reading tasks may indicate that your child has experienced summer reading loss.

    • Regression in Reading Progress: If your child's reading skills have regressed compared to where they were at the end of the previous school year, it may be a sign of summer reading loss.

By recognizing these signs, parents and educators can take proactive steps to support children in maintaining their reading skills and preventing summer learning loss.
